John Lithgow Stories by Heart - American Airlines Theatre
Playbill / Program Jan 2018
Mr. Lithgow doesn’t tell you in “Stories by Heart,” his funny, poignant tribute to his parents and grandmother at Roundabout's American Airlines Theatre. Early in this solo show, after he has greeted the audience and seated himself in an armchair with “my only prop,” a precious, family-owned book of tales, he says the evening is going to be about storytelling. Staring at his listeners with his “Who, me?” blue eyes, he asks: “Why do we all of us want to hear stories? Why do some of us want to tell them?” Mr. Lithgow does tell stories, and eventually acts out his family’s and his father’s favorite, P. G. Wodehouse’s “Uncle Fred Flits By,” in a hilarious, 45-minute tour de force that doubles as a primer on acting, including body language (note the battle-ax), vocal changes, timing and facial expression (the parrot especially). The effect seems effortless, an obvious strategy of the evening, as directed by Jack O’Brien, who directed Mr. Lithgow in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” on Broadway.
