Reservoir by Night - Melbourne Theatre Company 1985
by Barry Dickins
A whimsical, nostalgic look back at the Melbourne suburb where the playwright grew up. Long before it housed Melbourne’s emerging arts community, Reservoir, as award-winning playwright Barry Dickins recalls, was a "daggy bush town".
The 1950s and '60s were a time when cows, rather than fixie bikes, roamed the "dustbowl" of Cheddar Road, one of the main streets in Reservoir in north-east Melbourne. Gangsters such as Dylan "Gunny" Thomas controlled the pubs, when craft beers certainly weren't on tap. Barry Dickins is a prolific Australian playwright, author, artist, actor, educator and journalist, probably best known for his historical dramas and his reminisces about growing up and living in working class Melbourne. His most well-known work is the award winning stage play Remember Ronald Ryan, a dramatization of the life and subsequent death of Ronald Ryan, the last man executed in Australia.
