Jeffrey (Apr 1993)
John Michael Higgins, Patrick Kerr, Scott Whitehurst
Minetta Lane Theatre
While this might sound tasteless, Jeffrey was a much needed antidote at the time to the climate of death that had permeated gay culture for most of the previous decade. The play resonated with audiences and, two years later, it was adapted for the screen by Rudnick himself. The film, helmed by the play's original director, Christopher Ashley, featured an A-list cast augmented by a treasure trove of celebrity cameos
Paul Rudnick's "Jeffrey," receiving a fine production at Theatre in the Round, is a funny yet thoughtful play that uses the AIDS epidemic as a metaphor for a society at a risk-filled crossroads. Rudnick, also the author of the vastly lighter "I Hate Hamlet" at the Old Log Theater, uses humor and understanding in recounting one gay man's extreme reaction to the prevalence of AIDS and its corrosive effects on his social life and sexual activities. Jeffrey is, by his own admission, a sexual libertine. He lives for easy, noncommitted sex. But when his sexual encounters become increasingly disturbed by concerns of safety, and his friends are infected and dying.
