Amadeus by Peter Shaffer
Sydney Theatre Company 1982
It is based on the lives of the composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, highly fictionalized. Amadeus was first performed in 1979. It was inspired by Mozart and Salieri, a short play by Aleksandr Pushkin which was later adapted into an opera of the same name by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, both the play and the opera were written during the 19th century. Shaffer then adapted Amadeus for a film released in 1984.
