Equus - The Leaves are Fading - Gala Performance 1990

The Australian Ballet at the State Theatre Victorian Arts Center

''Equus: The Ballet,'' which was first produced by the Baltimore Ballet in 1980, concerns a boy, Alan, who, because he has blinded six horses in a violent outburst, is sent to a psychiatrist, Martin Dysart. Eventually, Dysart learns that the troubled Alan considers horses to be supernatural powers. In the play, Dysart also fears that adjustment to normality may be adjustment to what Mr. Shaffer calls ''the Average made lethal'' and he suspects that in his irrational exaltations Alan has experienced Dionysian ecstasy.
