Filumena - Melbourne Theatre Comapany 1984

by Eduardo De Filippo

Filumena Domenico is a former Neopolitan prostitute who has had three sons by three different fathers. As her sons become adults Filumena feels the pressing need to become respectable and so she searches for a man to marry her, ensuring legitimacy for her family.

Filumena Marturano (1946) - perhaps the best-known post-war Italian comedy also performed abroad - has a central role in the production of Eduardo De Filippo, placing itself among the first texts of that Cantata of the odd days that, starting from Naples millionaire!, collects the most complex and problematic works in which the dramas, anxieties and hopes of a country and a people upset by war pour. In the drama of Filumena, which refuses to reveal to her lover which of the three children she has brought into the world is hers, De Filippo stated that she intended to represent an allegory of Italy torn apart and largely depleted even morally, and foreshadow the dignity and will to redeem.
