Reservoir by Night - Melbourne Theatre Company 1985
by Barry Dickins
A whimsical, nostalgic look back at the Melbourne suburb where the playwright grew up. Long before it housed Melbourne’s emerging arts community, Reservoir, as award-winning playwright Barry Dickins recalls, was a "daggy bush town".
The 1950s and '60s were a time when cows, rather than fixie bikes, roamed the "dustbowl" of Cheddar Road, one of the main streets in Reservoir in north-east Melbourne. Gangsters such as Dylan "Gunny" Thomas controlled the pubs, when craft beers certainly weren't on tap. Barry Dickins is a prolific Australian playwright, author, artist, actor, educator and journalist, probably best known for his historical dramas and his reminisces about growing up and living in working class Melbourne.[2] His most well-known work is the award winning stage play Remember Ronald Ryan, a dramatization of the life and subsequent death of Ronald Ryan, the last man executed in Australia.
