Salt - State Theatre Company of South Australia 2002
by Peta Murray
When Meg the gourmet and Laurel - her glamorous mother and the world's worst cook - find themselves sharing a kitchen, they battle over more than just bench space and who gets to lick the bowl. Kitchen lore and kitchen wars are amongst the ingredients in this exquisite exploration of a mother-daughter dynamic.
Peta Murray’s “Salt” is literally a kitchen-sink drama, perfectly targeted to please conservative, mostly female. In the neat two-and-a-half hander, an aging mother and her middle-aged daughter –forced into each other’s company by the mother’s declining health — engage in an emotional tug-of-war around a waist-high sink/benchtop/stove in the daughter’s kitchen as a generic male ducks and weaves around them.
