Le Carnavel
Choreography - Michael Fokine - Reproduced by Laurel Martyn
Carnaval (Russian: Карнавал) is a ballet based on the music of Robert Schumann's piano suite Carnaval, Op. 9, as orchestrated by Alexander Glazunov, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Anatoly Lyadov and Alexander Tcherepnin. It was choreographed by Michel Fokine to his own libretto, with costumes designed by Léon Bakst, and premiered in Pavlovsk on 5 March (old style, 20 February) 1910.
The leading dancers of the Imperial Ballet were engaged in the production: Tamara Karsavina (Columbine), Leonid Leontiev (Harlequin), Vera Fokina (Chiarina), Ludmila Schollar [ru] (Estrella), Bronislava Nijinska (Papillon), Vsevolod Meyerhold (Pierrot), Vasily Kiselev (Florestan), and Aleksandr Shiryaev [ru] (Eusebius).
Gemini
Choreography - Glen Tetley
When Gemini premiered in 1973, it caused a sensation. Not only was it the first time that The Australian Ballet had been seen in lycra (later on in the decade, when the ballet went to Russia, it scandalised audiences, who thought that the dancers were nude!), but Glen Tetley’s sensuous, space-devouring choreography was on the very edge of the new. Now, almost 30 years later, the ballet still looks fresh, and is still honing our dancers to the peak of their fitness! (And just quietly … Nureyev, who was in Australia at the time, saw the Gemini’s lycra unitards and was inspired to get a whole suite of costumes made for himself in the new space-age fabric – all the better to show off those famous legs.)
Of Blessed Memory
Choreography - Stanton Welch
Stanton Welch, eldest son of Marilyn Jones and Garth Welch and a dancer in the company, kicks off his choreographic career with Of Blessed Memory, a tribute to the mother-son bond. Jones comes out of retirement to dance the mother.
