The Competition - Australian Ballet

Le Concours by Maurice Bejart

The Australian Ballet

State Theatre Melbourne June 1995

Maurice-Jean Berger was born in Marseille, France in 1927, the son of French philosopher Gaston Berger. Fascinated by a recital of Serge Lifar, he decided to devote himself entirely to dance. In South France days, he had studied under Mathilde Kschessinska. In 1989 Australian Ballet had famous dance teachers to work with the company this year include Johnny Eliasen from the Royal Danish Ballet, Gilbert Meyer from the Paris Opéra School and Wang Jiahong from the Central Ballet of China. One teacher who deserves special mention is Doug Tremlett, who teaches the company the magic tricks performed in Maurice Béjart’s The Competition. Each of the dancers is required to sign the Magicians’ Code of Secrecy.
